Information About Shravan Month / Shravan Maas

Shravan maas is a very auspicious festival associated with lord shiva. It is the most suitable time to perform various pujas as this month marks the beginning of something new and positive. All Mondays(shravan somvar) in Shravan month are celebrated in Lord Shiva temples. Nakshatra or birth star of Lord Vishnu or Shravan Nakshatra and is called shravan maas.

As it carries such great importance in the life of the devotees you’ll find many of them fasting throughout or atleast on Mondays. It is one of the most holiest festivals in the Hindu calendar. Along with Monday other three days are also considered highly auspicious that is Shravan Mangalvar or Tuesdays, Shravan Shukrawar or Fridays and Shravana Shaniwar of Saturdays. A Dharanatra is hung over the shivling overflowing with Holy water and milk, to continuously bathe the lingam, throughout the day and night. Shiva devotees offer flowers, bael leaf and holy water to lord shiva on Mondays.

During the month of shravan one must wake up early in the morning, freshen up and go to the temple of lord shiva and must offer a mix of ghee, milk, yogurt, gangajal and honey which is famously known as panchamrut. All individuals following Shravana must fast and if you’re unable to do so for the full month, fasting on 
Mondays instead will help. One can consume milk or milk products and even other fasting approved items. There are four types of vrats ( fasting ) are done which are Sawan Somwar Vrat, Solah Somwar Vrat, Pradosh Vrat and Mangala Gauri Vrat.

1. Sawan Somwar Vrat – This is done on every Monday (Somvar) in the month. Usually, there are only 4 Mondays but sometimes it can be 5.

2. Solah Somwar Vrat – This is done by young girls who fast for their future husband. They fast for 16 Mondays which begins from the first Monday of Shravan maas.

3. Pradosh Vrat – It is performed on the 13th day as it is said that worshipping shiva is special on that day. Devotees of lord shiva fast very strictly on this day and carry out a puja in his name.

4. Mangala Gauri Vrat – Mangala Gauri Vrat is done on Tuesdays in the Shravan Maas. It is said that if you do this fast you will have a successful and loving marriage and it gives your partner a long life.

Wake up early and do a jaap with the mantra ‘ OM NAMAH SHIVAAY’ nine or one hundred and eight times. It will stabilize your mind and bring your focus to one stimuli and helps to balance your chakras.
